The Proud Family Wiki

Charlette "Suga Mama" Towne-Proud is Bobby and Oscar's mother, Trudy's mother-in-law, and Penny, BeBe, and CeCe's grandmother. She is a hip, wrestling-loving grandmother who does Tae-Bo. She is very sassy, and always gets straight to the point when she talks. She constantly insults, discourages, and beats up Oscar using her rude temper, but she loves him deep down when she always gets calm. Her age is unknown, though she was born before the Korean War, as revealed in "Teacher's Pet". She's often made fun of by her son. An event from twenty years ago shows her looking exactly the same as before, however, while slimming down to fit into a wedding dress her diet was so successful that she gained the slim and attractive body she had as a young woman. She was born and raised in a desolate town named Towne, Oklahoma.

As an adult, she is voiced by Jo Marie Payton. As a child, she was voiced by Dominique Fishback in Old Towne Road.

Appearance[]

Suga Mama is an elderly heavy set African American woman with white hair worn in two Afro puffs. She wears red square glasses. She wears a pink coat with a light pink shawl over her shoulders, a darker pink dress underneath, and magenta slippers.

In the reboot, her appearance doesn’t change at all other than the dress under her coat is now light blue.

Personality[]

Suga Mama, in general, is a very peppy grandmother who still considers herself to be in her youthful prime; she can lack self-awareness when undergoing events that show her age (falling asleep in front of the TV in loud conditions, getting exhausted after walking up a large hill, flirting with other men, etc.) But she can be a very active grandmother despite her age.

She loves her family and puts them ahead of everything else. Although she fights constantly with Oscar, she still loves him and has proven to have his best interests in mind.

Relationships[]

Family[]

Oscar[]

Oscar and Suga Mama have a somewhat complicated relationship. She repeatedly shows no respect for Oscar, constantly comparing him to his more successful older brother Bobby, and insulting him for his short comings and get rich quick schemes that usually blow up in his face. Despite their seemingly spiteful relationship, Suga Mama does defend her son at times when he is insulted by anyone other than herself. When her sister Spice revealed she was using Oscar to swindle people of their money and letting him take the fall, Suga Mama stood up for her son and saved him, admitting that while she may not like her son all the time, she still always loves him.

Bobby[]

Penny[]

Papi[]

Suga Mama is in love with Papi Boulevardez. On the contrary, Papi despises Suga Mama and often makes rude remarks about her in Spanish which she usually thinks are compliments.

Pa Towne[]

Suga Mama is shown to have a difficult relationship with her father, Pa Towne. Despite Suga Mama's attempts to impress him, and her natural physical strength and skill at rodeo, Pa Towne's sexist worldview and expectations lead him to disapprove of Suga Mama's less conventionally womanly traits and forbid her from being involved in the family business. This led Suga Mama to cut all contact with her family. Eventually, following the family reunion and Suga Mama's bullriding saving Oscar, father and daughter reconcile.

Spice[]

Suga Mama has a troubled relationship to her older sister Sista Spice due to the fact that her parents only paid attention to Sista Spice instead of her in their childhood, and considers her to be untrustworthy.

Trivia[]

  • She was voiced by former Family Matters star Jo Marie Payton.
  • Her husband Percy Proud died prior to the series.
  • Fans speculated that her name was Henrietta Proud, before her name was actually revealed in the revival series.
  • In "The Soul Vibrations", Suga Mama unexplainably looked exactly as she currently does, the only difference being that she wore a floral pattern dress in the past. It's also revealed that before Puff, she owned a Boston Terrier named Otis.
